Creating Civil Relationships

In the last two blogs, I talked about the importance of civility in our communities and what factors can create incivility.  In this blog we’ll look at some key strategies that can help create mutual respect, understanding and effective communication that will foster more civil relationships:

  1. Practice Active Listening: Pay attention to what others are saying without interrupting. This shows respect and helps you understand their perspectives. Take the time to really listen and understand their point of view. You may be surprised and find out that you don’t differ all that much where it really counts. Even if you do it helps to know where they are coming from. Find some common ground before arguing with them. It can help show them that you are not the enemy.
  2. Show Empathy: Try to understand others' feelings and viewpoints. Empathy builds trust and strengthens connections.  Find something you agree with.
  3. Communicate Clearly: Express your thoughts and feelings honestly but tactfully.  Don’t judge the other person.  Avoid passive-aggressive behavior or hostility.
  4. Respect Boundaries: Recognize and honor personal boundaries.  This includes respecting others' time, space, and opinions.
  5. Be Open to Feedback: Don’t be afraid to ask for feedback. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and be willing to give it respectfully when necessary. There is always something we can learn from that interaction.
  6. Manage Conflicts Peacefully: When disagreements arise, address them calmly.  Focus on finding a solution that both of you can agree on rather than winning an argument.
  7. Be Reliable: Keep your commitments and be dependable.  Consistency builds trust and respect.
  8. Practice Kindness and Patience: Small acts of kindness and a patient demeanor can significantly enhance your relationships.
  9. Avoid Gossip: Refrain from speaking negatively about others behind their backs.  This behavior erodes trust and respect.
  10. Be Supportive: Offer help and encouragement when needed.  Supporting others strengthens bonds and fosters a positive environment.

Building and maintaining civil relationships is an ongoing process that requires effort, patience, and understanding from all parties involved.  The effort will be worth it.  It takes courage and a willingness to accept that you may be wrong, or you may have a bias against the other person or persons.  At the end of the day let us be kind towards one another. After all it is a stressful world for all of us.
